Frequently Asked Questions:HOW CAN I TELL IF MY ANIMAL NEEDS AN ADJUSTMENT?
Chiropractic can be used to help treat a multitude of problems ranging from gait abnormalities to allergies to hospice care for geriatric patients. No animal is too young or too old for a chiropractic adjustment. HOW DO YOU ADJUST A HORSE? Attention and focus is on each joint, the motion of the joint, and any restrictions that joint may have. Since each joint is attended to one at a time, it allows for adjustments to be performed without a dramatic amount of pressure, force, or traction. Adjustments are specific, fast, and have a low amplitude (shallow depth). |

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING AN APPOINTMENT?
For evaluations (first time appointments) we will want to see the animal move at each gait. A horse may be viewed under saddle or lunged. We will then palpate the motion of each joint, checking for restriction(s). Adjustments are made where restrictions are present to help the joint regain it's normal mobility. Appointments are best if in a quiet and relaxed setting. You may hear a "pop", but it's very common for there to be no noise during a chiropractic session. More on "popping", or "cavitation" on the Options for Animals website, view 'Common Misconceptions About Animal Chiropractic'.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FOLLOWING AN APPOINTMENT?
Many animals will feel relief and appear more comfortable. Few animals may exhibit soreness and mild inflammation for the next 24 hours. All animals should be allowed to rest the following day. Horses should be rested, turned out, or may be lightly lunged.
WHY ARE FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS RECOMMENDED WHEN MY ANIMAL SEEMS FINE?
Many animals are protective of their bodies and do not openly show discomfort or pain. Follow up appointments are recommended to ensure that the animal maintains peak mobility in their spine and joints.
WHY MUST I HAVE A "REGULAR" VETERINARIAN?
Balanced Animal Care is not staffed nor equipped to provide routine veterinary services. Animal Chiropractic care is not a replacement for routine veterinary care. At Balanced Animal Care we feel that having open and direct lines of communication with all parties involved with treating your pet is most beneficial. While we do not require referrals, we will follow up with your regular veterinarian.
